For your shop Genoese Basil DOP
or just basil?

Genoese Basil is a Ligurian product of excellence that obtained the DOP designation in 2005: a “shield” on which Ligurian producers can count to demonstrate beyond any doubt the link between product and territory.

The DOP qualifies those who sell it because it meets the expectations of consumers seeking quality and tradition.

A product with a very specific identity

The DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) is a basic guarantee that we can and must demand for basil, ensuring its provenance and traditional cultivation. A company that certifies Genoese Basil DOP demonstrates professionalism and a commitment to quality.
Buying directly from a trusted company? Always look for the DOP seal of guarantee.

Quality and local storytelling at the right price

Aroma and yield are key factors in basil quality, tied to its traditional cultivation on natural soil: it should be remembered that non-PDO basil may not meet these requirements. Explaining the difference between Basilico Genovese DOP and “basil e basta ” (similar to the difference between a red table wine and a Barolo DOCG) and explaining its characteristics, particularly its yield in pesto, improves your image by first acknowledging the product’s value and then its fair price.

A prestigious product is an advertising tool

Genoese Basil DOP evokes and represents the best of Liguria: it’s a renowned product that attracts customers’ attention and is increasingly sought after online. Selling Genoese Basil DOP means responding to this positive trend that values local production and leveraging it to your advantage, capitalizing on the product’s strong market appeal, in keeping with the trends of what’s known as the “DOP Economy.”

Why Genoese Basil DOP?

History and tradition

Genoese basil cultivation began in Genoa in the 19th century and quickly spread along the Ligurian coast, which proved ideal for producing a product with unique characteristics. Genoese basil DOP is a cornerstone of Liguria's gastronomic tradition.

Land and territory

Genoese Basil DOP is grown along the coastal coast of Liguria: the close connection between the territory and the product's characteristics is due to its microclimate and, above all, to the traditional cultivation on natural soil.

Typical cultivation and human factor

The production regulations include unique cultivation, harvesting, and packaging methods developed over time by local farmers: these are the methods that ensure the typical characteristics of Genoese Basil DOP, both for fresh consumption and for the food industry.

Traceability and guarantee

Genoese Basil with the “DOP” certification of origin offers certainty of origin and 100% transparency from producer to consumer, thanks to a traceability system verified by official controls.

Unique aroma and characterization

The aroma of Genoese Basil DOP is immediately recognizable for its intensity and pleasantness, and is distinguished by the complete absence of the minty hint found in conventional basil. Its aroma has played a key role in the success of Genoese pesto worldwide and is therefore the ingredient that best expresses its uniqueness and tradition. It is also an ideal product for creative recipes and evocative experiments with an intoxicating flavor.

Color and yield

Not just aroma: the color of Genoese Basil DOP
It is particularly intense and gives a characteristic green note
that strikes you at first glance. The quality of Genoese Basil DOP
It also stands out in its transformation as cultivation on natural soil ensures a high yield, while the traditional harvesting method guarantees exceptionally tender leaves to work with.

In retail distribution, there are rules for the protection and correct communication of Genoese Basil DOP, which also apply to non-DOP basil, aimed at avoiding misleading messages to consumers: knowing and applying them protects against sanctions.

WHY? Because non-PDO basil is not subject to checks on its origin, which involves not only its geographical provenance, but also its traditional cultivation.

Distinguish Genoese Basil DOP from "my cousin's basil"

The basil sales tag must:

1. Name the product correctly

Basil on the market is divided into two different products, each with its own name:

  1. Genoese Basil DOP
  2. Basil

PLEASE NOTE: Non-PDO basil cannot bear any label that refers to its geographical origin in areas of Liguria (municipalities, delegations, or territories such as Albenga, Pra’, Riviera, etc.).

2. Indicate the origin as follows

  • LIGURIA for Genoese Basil DOP
  • ITALY for non-PDO basil

PLEASE NOTE: Writing the Ligurian origin for basil that is not DOP is punishable, even if the origin is actually correct.

Why? Because non-PDO basil isn’t subject to verification of its origin, which involves not only its geographical provenance but also its traditional cultivation.

The basil packaging:
how to distinguish the DOP one

Genoese Basil DOP:

The packaging always has both brands and the complete company address.

Non-PDO basil:

The DOP marks are NOT present and the company address is optional: in any case, it is a product not subject to verification of its origin and cultivation method.

The sales label must provide correct information about the product and its origin.

WARNING! WRITING THE ORIGIN FOR A BASIL THAT IS NOT DOP IS SANCTIONABLE. EVEN IF THE ORIGIN IS FACTUALLY CORRECT.
