AUTHORIZATION TO USE THE WORDING

" with Genoese Basil DOP" AND THE LOGO

linea_marrone

Food companies that use Genoese Basil DOP as an ingredient in their products have the right to highlight it on the label (in addition to the list of ingredients).
The words “with Genoese Basil DOP” and the product logo may be added to the front of the label, subject to authorization from the Protection Consortium.

To request authorization from the Consortium, you must complete the authorization request with the product details and the suppliers of Basilico Genovese DOP.

Download the trademark use request here

The completed application must be sent by email to: info@basilicogenovese.it

Authorization can be requested by the manufacturing and packaging company or by the commercial company.

Manufacturing and packaging company

Authorization is granted for all labels of brands owned by the authorized company for packaged products that use Genoese Basil DOP.

This authorization is also valid for product labels (with Genoese Basil DOP) packaged by the already authorized company when operating under third-party brands, provided that the packaging shows the company name and full address of the authorized manufacturing-packaging company.

Commercial company
The authorization is also granted to commercial companies, allowing them to market products that use Genoese Basil DOP produced or packaged in third-party facilities that do not hold the authorization in question.
In this case, the requesting company is required to communicate to the Consortium, at the time of the request, the name of the producer and packager used and the address of the plant; it is also required to promptly communicate any changes.
Even in the case of renting or loaning a factory, the producer or trader is required to request authorization from the Consortium and to promptly communicate any changes to the production site.

The label must provide correct information to the consumer, in particular clearly highlighting that the PDO refers to an ingredient and not the finished product.

It is therefore important that the wording "DOP" is subordinate to the sales name of the finished product and clearly associated with Genoese Basil as an ingredient.

SALES NAME OF "PESTO"

The name “pesto” is not a protected designation and therefore is not subject to specific controls. Pesto labeling is regulated by Legislative Decree no. 109/92.

The Consortium for Genoese Basil DOP does not have the authority to control products labeled “pesto,” but it oversees the authenticity of the presence of Genoese Basil DOP as an ingredient and its correct disclosure on labels.

GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES OF BASIL

Names such as “Ligurian basil” or other references to areas of Liguria (such as “Pra basil”, “Albenga basil”) are prohibited by the General Directorate for the Quality of Agri-food Products of the MiPAAF, even if the basil was produced and purchased in Liguria by producers falling within the DOP production area.

Any use of names for basil that refer to its origin and evoke the protected designation “Basilico Genovese” is unlawful and constitutes an illegal act punishable under Article 2, paragraph 2 of Legislative Decree No. 297/04.

MANDATORY INFORMATION ON THE PESTO LABEL

Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 establishes the information that each product must display on the label:

  • the name of the food;
  • the list of ingredients;
  • the indication of any substance that causes allergies or intolerances;
  • the quantity of certain ingredients;
  • the net quantity of the food;
  • the minimum durability date or expiry date;
  • the particular storage conditions and/or conditions of use;
  • the name or business name and address of the food business operator responsible for the product and its safety;
  • the country of origin or place of provenance, where applicable;
  • the instructions for use, in cases where their omission would make it difficult to use the food properly;
  • a nutritional declaration.
