Basilico genovese produzione raccolta

An authentic Ligurian specialty

Genoese DOP Basil, to be consumed fresh, is available all year round, hand-picked and packaged in typical bouquets.

linea_marrone

Fresh Genoese DOP Basil in its famous bouquet is a specialty that reflects traditional greenhouse cultivation and a manual process that embodies all the value of Ligurian agricultural wisdom.

The aroma, the intoxicating taste and the intense colour find their most characteristic expression in the fresh ingredient.

The seedlings are harvested by hand when they have four to eight leaves and are wrapped, with the roots intact, in food-grade paper branded with the official logos.

A "protected" cultivation for a product available all year round

soil preparation and sowing

The sowing soil is softened by mechanical tillage and disinfected with water vapor to reduce the presence of diseases in the soil and thus limit the use of chemicals.

Sowing is done by broadcasting and at high density with Ocimum Basilicum L. seeds belonging to ecotypes or selections that present typical characteristics, in particular intense aroma and total absence of mint.

climate management in greenhouses

Basil, being a plant of tropical origin, prefers a temperature around 20°C and suffers from stagnant humidity. To ensure its growth all year round, it is grown in protected, air-conditioned environments, heated in winter and shaded in summer with climate control systems and constant air exchange ensured by ventilation, to preserve its health.

irrigation and pest control

Irrigation is a very delicate process that must be done manually, with extreme care by the farmer, to avoid the formation of parasites on the plants.

collection and packaging

The crop grows at high density according to tradition and is harvested exclusively by hand, on special wooden boards suspended above the crop, where the operator lies down to reach the soil without trampling it. The plants, complete with roots, are immediately packaged in small bunches (from 3 to 10 plants) or in large bunches or “bouquets” (from 30 to 100 plants).

Genoese Basil DOP is grown primarily in greenhouses for fresh sale year-round. This is why you can find fresh produce in Liguria’s most select markets and shops, all year round.
