Whoever says Genoese Basil DOP says Liguria

The homeland of Genoese Basil, a land of infinite treasures.

linea_marrone

A stretch of land suspended between sea and mountains. Sun, Mediterranean scents, and colors. A crossroads of history and traditions.

The contours of a unique landscape shape the customs and moods of its simple, authentic people. Mountains plunge sheer into the sea, and hills, wild or softened by human labor. Parks, nature reserves, and a dense network of hiking trails demonstrate how nature still governs this land. The coastline is often rugged and rugged, yet it surprises the eye with delightful shorelines.

Genoese Basil DOP is the typical crop that crosses the Ligurian territory and is the symbol that brings its excellence to the world.

An essential ingredient behind the fame of Genoese pesto, Genoese Basil DOP is grown along the coastal side of Liguria.
The essential oil composition of basil grown here is different from that of any other area of the world.

DOP and territory

Territory as Environment: Food and Origin

The cultivation environment of Basilico Genovese DOP is the natural terrain located along the seaward side of Liguria, on this side of the Apennine watershed.

TERRITORY AS TRADITION: food and culture

The virtues of Genoese Basil DOP are the fruit of the human factors that inhabit the territory, that is, of the history and traditional “native” cultivation techniques developed over the last century, first in Genoa and later throughout Liguria.

Speaking of ” territorial origin ” for Basilico Genovese DOP means linking it both to the Ligurian environment and to respect for traditional techniques: only this inseparable union gives rise to this inimitable product.

Genoese DOP basil is distinguished on the label from “anonymous” basil, that is, basil with uncertified origin.

The protection system prohibits the association of non-PDO basil with geographical origins within Liguria. This protects its authentic value in and for the region.

The DOP reserves the use of the name “Basilico Genovese” only for products that demonstrate, by certifying, their origin from the territory.

Why is the name of the DOP “Genoese Basil”?

Pra', Genoa, Liguria, world.

Did you know that basil was introduced to the Mediterranean by the Ancient Romans, who used it for medicinal purposes?

Its use as a food product only began in the 19th century, in Genoa. Why?

Because in Genoa, it found a highly specialized agricultural area, which supplied the capital and the bustling port area with early produce. This is why the Genoa Pra’ area is still famous today.

But the success of this crop has seen the need for producers to expand, starting from the Genoa area, towards larger areas both to the east and to the west.

The entire coastal side of Liguria has proven to be suitable for developing the typical aroma, applying the traditional technique.

Thanks to this expansion and the ability to continue historical production, even adapting it to the development of the industrial market, the PDO for Genoese Basil has been recognized throughout Liguria.

A flagship product that brings Liguria’s prestige to the world, while maintaining in its name the essential historical role that the city of Genoa played in the origins of this unique product.
