An open letter to Ligurian restaurateurs from the Genoese Basil DOP Consortium.

Dear Restaurateur,
One product that’s never missing from your Ligurian restaurant is basil: a key ingredient in Genoese pesto and a symbol of the region, but not only that: a fresh, prime-seasoned vegetable also suited to numerous interpretations of dishes and drinks with a “Ligurian flavor.”

With this letter, the Consortium for the Protection of Genoese Basil DOP informs you about the peculiarities and opportunities of Genoese Basil DOP, the product with guaranteed origin capable of enhancing your menu and highlighting expertise and attention to quality and local products.

Find out who the Protection Consortium is and what it does.

For a restaurant that speaks of the territory, Genoese Basil DOP is the symbolic product of Liguria.
Its unique aroma is guaranteed by its certified origin.

Promoting this prestigious product with your customers enhances your image.
“Basilico Genovese” is a product of excellence: this is why it deserves the protection of the DOP, which clearly meets consumer expectations regarding quality, tradition, and connection to the territory.

An interesting story, a significant choice.
Restaurant operations are based on encounters, expertise, and inspiration. Genoese Basil DOP embodies the territory, tradition, and history of Liguria, and thanks to the Protected Designation of Origin mark, it becomes a testament to the commitment and research of those who choose it. Explaining the difference between Genoese Basil DOP and “basil e basta” (similar to the difference between a red table wine and a Barolo DOCG) and explaining its characteristics puts you in the spotlight and enhances your professional image.

Let’s talk about quality.

A company that certifies Genoese Basil DOP demonstrates professionalism and attention to quality. Fragrance and yield are key elements of basil quality, linked to traditional cultivation in natural soil. It should be noted that non-DOP basil may not meet these requirements. Individuals can experience any differences based on their own tastes.

IGenoese Basil DOP advertises you
Genoese Basil DOP is a product with high prestige and potential on social media and online browsing. The official website and social media reach an audience of approximately 40,000 people per month, many of whom ask where to buy Genoese Basil DOP. Giving visibility to restaurants that have signed commercial agreements with Genoese Basil DOP producers is one of the goals of the Protection Consortium

Genoese Basil DOP is a pillar of Liguria’s agricultural economy and its image.
As with all PDO products, all stages of production of Genoese Basil take place in its area of origin: the PDO therefore plays an important role in protecting the local economy and represents a tangible asset that benefits the entire regional agri-food sector.
Having verified that the product grown along the Ligurian coast using traditional techniques has unique characteristics, the PDO designation was requested and obtained from the European Union.
Why was the DOP created?
Basil cultivation began in Genoa in the early 1900s and gained prominence in the 1970s (particularly in the Pra’ area, which is rich in producers), expanding throughout Liguria and bringing it to national and then global fame.
This has led growers to develop a need to protect and market traditionally produced basil, leaving its value in the hands of local producers and the global market.
The name “Basilico Genovese” was chosen for the DOP due to its historical origins.

You can and must distinguish Genoese Basil DOP from “my cousin’s basil”: FIND OUT HOW.

Buy Genoese Basil DOP with awareness.
When you buy basil from a trusted company, the presence of the DOP label is a basic guarantee, while when you buy from a wholesaler, you can ask for Genoese Basil DOP to ensure the provenance is verified.
