In 2008, the Ministry of Agricoltural, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAAF) recognized
the “Consorzio di Tutela del Basilico Genovese D.O.P.” as an association which protect and preserve this type of basil. Almost all producers of Basilico Genovese D.O.P take part into the consortium.
The consortium deals with the product for the fresh market and for its transformation. All packers are producers; according to the current legislation it doesn't exist a "pure" packer that packs basil on behalf of other producers.
The Consortium pursues the purposes below:
- Promotion and enhancement:
through promotional programs aimed to spread the brand and the peculiar characteristics of the D.O.P product with consumers and traders
- Protection of the product’s identity:
through the producers awareness to fully preserving the characteristics of the traditional product through specific protection actions
- Defence against fraud and misleading messages:
implementing the project agreed with the Ispettorato centrale della tutela della qualità e repressione frodi dei prodotti agroalimentari.
