History and protection of the DOP, the future and biodiversity of the jewel of our territory will be the themes of the conference “ At the roots of the myth of Genoese Basil ” scheduled for Tuesday 11 February 2025 at 10.30 am in Genoa in the prestigious Sala Trasparenza of the Liguria Region in Piazza De Ferrari.
A historical-scientific meeting and press conference offering a comprehensive look at Genoese Basil DOP, Liguria’s most representative product, and its connection to the region that has contributed to the global success of pesto.
An audience made up of the main specialists and institutions at the forefront of the sector, for a real cultural and scientific study on Genoese Basil, dedicated to journalists and all those who are part of this prestigious and strategic supply chain, to stay up to date and make the most of it.
The meeting will open with an important reflection on the history and production of this excellent product and its evolution on the market, where today the protection of the PDO makes a real difference for producers, consumers, and operators, as an essential ingredient to be proudly displayed in pesto recipes and in the increasingly interesting field of local marketing.
The meeting will focus on the ongoing scientific research of the OLD BASIL project (supported by the Liguria Region’s Rural Development Program) on biodiversity . This research has enabled the recovery and characterization of the original native seeds. Thanks to the expert selection of local farmers, these seeds contributed in the past to the unique characteristics now known and protected by the “Basilico Genovese” PDO, thus preventing their genetic depletion.
It will also be a favorable context to illustrate the strategies of regional institutional policies to support excellent production by promoting quality linked to origin, biodiversity and sustainability, where the Vice President of the Liguria Region, Alessandro Piana , will also speak.
